Chinese have been facing a few disruptions on sending messages and photos/videos on WhatsApp lately and now the Chinese government has blocked this app from all across China.
Nadim Kobeissi, an applied cryptographer at Symbolic Software, told the verge, “Essentially, it seems that what we initially monitored as censorship of WhatsApp’s photo, video and voice note sharing capabilities in July has now evolved to what appears to be consistent text messaging blocking and throttling across China.”
China updated its firewall to detect the NoiseSocket Protocol that WhatsApp uses to send texts, even Chinese have already blocked the HTTPS/TLS through which WhatsApp sends pictures/videos. “I think it took time for the Chinese firewall to adapt to this new protocol so that it could also target text messages,” said Nadim Kobeissi.
Anything that Facebook is left to offer to China is the Colorful Balloon app, which was released undercover in August.
Whatsapp uses end-to-end encryption which intends to keep the conversation private whereas, in China every single personal data is recorded to the Chinese authorities.
