The BlackBerry Priv was the first Android phone from the luxury phone maker. It was a high-end phone with a physical keyboard, and it was the last handset manufactured in-house by BlackBerry. But it won’t get any further updates.
BlackBerry’s General manager of Mobilty Solutions, Alex Thurber, confirmed the news during the 100th episode of the UTB Blogcast. On the podcast, he said that getting together all the partners needed would be near to impossible. The Priv also didn’t receive much success, so extended software support already appeared questionable.
The Priv brought Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with it but was later updated to 6.0 Marshmallow. There are basically no custom ROMs available for the phone either, so even unofficial ports of Nougat (or Oreo) seem improbable. Hopefully TCL’s newer BlackBerry devices will see longer support periods.
