The latest Snapchat update is that the photo and video messaging app has activated the GIF feature in Snapchat stories once again.
Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc. confirmed that the GIFs were eliminated from the Snap stories after a GIF appeared into the Giphy Library that was considered racist, and was discovered by a user. Anyway, the latest Snapchat update is that weeks after this incident, Snapchat has finally restored this feature in its stories again and all the users can now use it just like before!
This incident took place earlier this month and an expected immediate action was taken by both Snapchat app and Instagram. Both the social media apps removed the GIF feature from their stories within the day and were not happy with it at all.
Instagram restored the feature once again last week.
Instagram restored the GIF feature in its stories again last week and confirmed that the moderation of the GIF library will be stricter now and it will be checked four times before being updated for the use.
“We’ve been in close contact with GIPHY throughout this process and we’re confident that they have put measures in place to ensure that Instagram users have a good experience,”. This was said by a spokesperson of Instagram in an interview.
This is what Giphy, the company owning all the GIFs had to say about the racial slur:
The company Giphy did not hesitate to apologize about the incident at once and said that it happened mistakenly due to a problem in the database that was left undetected. In addition to that, they said that they will take all preventive measures to protect this from happening once again.
Giphy updates its library from the GIFs uploaded by the users who are prohibited to post any kind of offensive, abusive, or racial content in it.
Both Snapchat and Instagram restored this feature once again within weeks of this incident and have stated that both will make sure to prevent this future trouble from happening again.
