Five of the most popular smart TV brands: Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL and Vizio were involved in an evaluation which concluded that these companies were tracking viewing habits of their customers, a feature that is active even when they’re not streaming!
Whilst tracking does seem dangerous and is illegal to some degree since the smart TV user is not aware that their viewing activities are being recorded, it does no real damage. All websites that we visit do so as well? Ever scrolled a product on an e-commerce site and then see the same or related items as Facebook ads or sponsored Instagram posts? That means you are being tracked! That, however, is all that tracking does. Help corporations target their products to those who might be interested and become potential customers.
