Cycling, also known as biking, is one thing we learn during childhood and never forget till each our hair follicle turns grey. This might be due to the fun memories attached with those bike rides when life was carefree.
Now, when life is a lot busy and not so carefree, we need to take good care of ourselves, both physically and mentally, and cycle helps doing both.
While is helps calming, releases the stress out of our mind, it also works wonders for our bodies physically.
Main Physical Benefits Of Cycling
Easy on your joints:
Sitting on a bikes makes you put your body’s weight on a pair of bones, in the pelvis, called the ischial tuberosities, unlike walking, which makes us put our weight on your legs. “That makes it good for anyone with joint pain or age-related stiffness,” says Dr. Safran-Norton.
An aerobic workout:
Cycling is a form of aerobic workout and that’s great for your heart, brain, and blood vessels. Aerobic exercise helps triggering the release of endorphins, our body’s ‘feel good chemicals’ which may make us feel young.
During the down stroke or the power phase of pedaling , we use the gluteus muscles of buttocks, the quads of thigh and the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of our calf. While during the recovery phase( backstroke, up-stroke, and overstroke), we tend to use the hamstrings in the back of our thighs and the flexors in the front of the hips.
Also, our abdominal muscles are balanced and stay upright, and we use our arm and shoulder muscles to hold the handlebars and steer.
Enhancing Everyday Activities:
Dr. Safran-Norton says that the benefits carry over to balance, walking, standing, endurance, and stair climbing.
Cycling is a very healthy activity and it’s good to see Pakistani’s promoting such activities under the banner of critical mass or girls at dhabas.
