Liter of light is an open source global movement aiming to provide free ecologically sustainable and cost-free lighting for simple dwellings.
It is a light of hope for those who have lived their life in dark for ages. It helps impoverished communities living around the globe by reusing old plastic bottles to create their own light.
Liter of Light has lit over 850,000 homes so far. They aim to reach 1 million in 2018.
The first step to begin is with day lights which are created by filling up the containers with water and bleach. They are then settled to rooftops refracting sunlight throughout the daytime.
The second step is to construct solar night lights by including a micro solar based panel in the plastic bottle.
The movement started in Philippines in 2012, and now has spread to over 15 countries.
PepsiCo Pakistan has also made great initiative by contributing to this project since 2015. The company has joined hands with Liter of Light Pakistan to start #LightingUpLives by installing the recycled bottles in poor communities.
