A construction so magnificent with a feel of pure serenity, this Abu Dhabi’s most iconic mosque gives a warm impressive welcome to all the Abu Dhabi visitors.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an expression of a leader who believed in the fact that by true devotion, everything is achievable. The Grand Mosque was the dream of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who aimed to initiate such a structure that would bring together culturally diversified people of the Islamic world with the modern architecture. The mosque was constructed between 1996 and 2007. The late president is also buried in the grounds beside the same mosque.
The magnificent design of the Grand Mosque is made by Yousef Abdelky. It is draped in pure white colour. Pure white Greek and Macedonian marble and exquisite floral patterns inlaid in precious stones, lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone, jasper and mother-of-pearl, are of sheer magnificence.
Its interior is literally ‘Grand’, as the way it is spectacularly decorated. The modern and innovative decor gives you that breath-taking sigh, with imported steel, gold, brass chandeliers, from the company Faustig in Munich, Germany that incorporates millions of sparkling Swarovski crystals.
The most awe-inspiring feature of the main prayer hall is the world’s largest carpet. The hand-knotted carpet, which took around 2 years and almost 1,200 artisans for completion. The detailed medallion design was made by third generation carpet maker and artist, Dr Ali Khaliqi.
Sheikh Zayed’s tomb is also in the Grand Mosque. While photos of the tomb are not allowed, visitors are allowed to photo every single other piece of the mosque.
