In this era, where every other phone is using Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset in their phones, Apple left behind. The tech giant recently revealed the reason why Apple is still lacking these chips. The plan of the company was to use Qualcomm chips in iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, but they couldn’t. That’s because Qualcomm refused to sell them the chips after Apple got sued over its licensing practice.
The Chief Operating Officer of Apple, Jeff Williams stated: “In the end, they would not support us or sell us chips.” Qualcomm, on the other hand, refused to give license to patents of other chip manufacturers. As Apple is getting their chips manufactured from Intel modems. Though Apple refused this whole scenario. According to Jeff Williams, Apple’s plan was to partially work with Intel and Qualcomm for the chipset. But as Qualcomm refused to work for Apple, they ultimately had to reach out to Intel entirely, for all their phones.
What’s the Drawback In Working With Intel?
Apple if solely depending upon Intel, will miss many important things. The most important one is bringing 5G in iPhones. Intel is now a bit behind the competitors. The expected year for Intel to introduce 5G is by 2020. And Qualcomm has already started to capture this market.
The price Apple had to pay in working with Qualcomm would be five times more than they were paying to Intel. Yet Apple knows the consequences they might face in future, due to which this eagerness in working with Qualcomm is still alive.
The cold war between two companies started back in 2017 when Apple sued Qualcomm for their unfair licensing terms. And Qualcomm counter back with the same sue option. They claimed that Apple was trying to share Qualcomm information with Intel. And in 2018 October, Qualcomm went to the court, as Apple owes $7 Billion to Qualcomm, and due to this fact, iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 were pulled off from the market of Germany.
